Tips for traveling with a newborn

Traveling with a newborn can feel overwhelming and mostly we try to avoid it in those early weeks. But with the holidays upon us it can be unavoidable.

Tips for Road Trips

If you are planning a road trip with your newborn here are some ways to make it a smoother ride:

  • Drive at night if possible. Driving at night can be uncomfortable for parents but usually babies will sleep for longer stretches at night.

  • Someone always needs to be sitting in the backseat with the baby. Babies should not be left alone in a carseat for long periods of time. Make sure your baby remains in a correct position in the carseat.

  • Be prepared to stop. A lot. It is still important to be feeding your baby frequently. Pay attention to feeing cues and wake your baby to eat if necessary.

  • Take turns driving so that someone can be attentive to the baby in the backseat.

  • Wait until at least two weeks of age to travel long distances.

Tips for Flying

  • Babies fly for free and can sit on your lap. For newborns this is very doable and ideal.

  • Breastfeed during take off and landing. It can help with pressure in their ears. If you do not breastfeed, use a bottle or pacifier.

  • As a general rule, you should wait two weeks to fly with your newborn.

  • If you are flying internationally, your baby will need a passport.

  • Ask your airline if they have an airline bassinet available. These are a lifesaver for long flights.

  • You can bring as much breastmilk or formula as needed. You do not have to abide by the 100ml rule.

Whether you are flying or driving, remember to try and relax and take it as it comes. Every baby responds different to travel.
